Movies
Over the weekend we rented movies and waited for the promised 90-100 mph winds. The wind didn’t come but we were glad to have the movies anyway. We rented one for the kids (Meet the Robinson’s) that they liked and two for us. Here are my reviews:
Waitress PG-13
With Keri Russel. Oh. My. Goodness. Do NOT waste your money on this horrible movie. Even while we were watching it, I wondered why we were watching it. In the movie everyone (seriously. All the main characters) was married and having extra-marital affairs. Like it was nothing!
Keri Russell’s character is supposed to be really good at making pies and wants to win a contest so she can leave her husband, but finds out that she is pregnant and he wont let her go to the contest. She has an affair with her OB/GYN. The problem was though that they didn’t do a good job of portraying her husband as the horrible guy that they said he was.
I will say that I thought that the ending was cute. I wont spoil it in case someone really wants to watch it, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
Amazing Grace PG-13
This movie is about a man that tries to bring out about the end of the British Slave Trade. It was good. Parts of it were kind of confusing, and keeping track of all the different people was tricky for me, but it was very moving. And it was appropriate. It seems like sometimes with these types of movies they make them to graphic, but with this movie they got their point across with out being overly graphic. And the soundtrack was fabulous. Definitely a thinking movie. See it if you get a chance!
Weekend Recap & Movies
I forgot to report last week: down 1.5 pounds
and this week: down 1 pound
My MIL came in on Friday afternoon, and the weekend whizzed by way to fast. Friday afternoon was spent playing Candy-land, coloring and catching up. We at dinner at Quizno’s (have you tried their broccoli soup? It is the best!) and went to see the Bee Movie. Saturday morning we went to the park to play “baseball.” Playing baseball with a six-year-old, a four-year-old and a two-year-old is kind of a joke, but everyone got a turn batting, running and chasing. Oldest spent a lot of time throwing fits and eventually the game was ended for some time sliding down the slides before heading home for a lunch of grilled cheese and turkey sandwiches. Then we headed to the zoo with the rest of the northwest. It was a beautiful day and we had a good time exploring the zoo and seeing the animals that we missed last time. The sea otters were really active and the kids (especially the youngest) thought that was great. On the way home, we enjoyed dinner at Godfather’s Pizza (thank you, Grandma!). We watched a movie Saturday night and tried to not fall asleep. Sunday morning we all woke far too early because of the time change. My kids were up at 6:00. Imagine how pleasant they were at church. They weren’t pleasant. It was a bit of nightmare. Oh, well. Afterwards we enjoyed a long walk and Bryan grilled steak for dinner. We watched another movie, went to bed and by the time we got up for breakfast Grandma was at the airport and it was time to get life back to normal. We had fun.
Now for the movies:
The Bee Movie – So cute! I am glad we saw, but I don’t think that we will buy it. It stars Jerry Seinfeld and Renee Zellweger and Chris Rock (as a mosquito). It is about a bee that decides that he doesn’t want to choose one job to do for the rest of his life so he goes out of the hive and discovers that humans are using their honey. It had a few laughs for the adults (my kids were too young to get the jokes) and kept the kids interested.
Because I Said So – Stars Mandy Moore and Diane Keaton. Do. Not. See. It. There is so much sex talk and innuendo. If you insist on seeing it, don’t watch it with your mother-in-law. Embarrassment is sure to follow.
Flicka – Stars Alison Lohman and Tim McGraw. It was a cute movie. Tim McGraw isn’t much of an actor and there was several really cheesy lines (Dad, it’s okay if you shoot us!) but it was a feel-good movie. My mother-in-law figures that it encourages kids to be disobedient. It is about a girl that decides to try to tame a mustang on her own, even though her dad has told her not to.
I hope everyone else had a great weekend.
Thoughts from last week

Don’t doubt that thought to not get the “cool” cart at Safeway. When you fall for your children’s pleas and get the car cart you will end up with the loudest, most off balance cart ever. Your elbows will be sore when you are done shopping.
Going into the store for milk, and milk alone, is impossible. You will come out with tortillas, rice-a-roni, chips and raisins. And wheat thins. (And $60 later)
Don’t put son’s comforter and comforter cover back on his bed after you wash it. You will have to re-wash it the next day and try to get the cover back on. Again.
Don’t think that you will never say: “Don’t jump on the couch. Especially with a hammer in your mouth.” You will.
Don’t think that all the laundry will be done in one day. With the dryer needing to run everything for two 70 minute cycles (why is it doing this?!), it will take at least 3 days to get the laundry done. And then there will 3 more days worth of clothes to wash, dry, fold, and put away.
Don’t be surprised when, after watching N put on pink from head to toe, and you tell her that she is a ‘pink girl’, she yells, “I am black! My skin is black!”
Don’t stand on one foot with other foot twisted around while you give your talk in sacrament meeting. You will wonder through out the talk if you are going to faint.
Don’t freak out when you realize the stake president is on the stand. And. You. Are. Speaking.
Don’t get too excited about the Bourne Ultimatum DVD release, just because the Bourne Supremacy is on tv. That doesn’t mean that it comes out soon. Internet searches will not tell you the date. Who knows when it comes out? (I can’t wait!) Continue waiting patiently for Ocean’s 13 and Hairspray to come out on DVD. Both in November.
Pray when you feel most unworthy.
Smile when A starts taking Lighting and Mater to bed with him. Along with Doggy, Pupper and his beloved Froggy blanket. Before long there wont be room for him in that bed.
Don’t send son to his room for timeout. He will think it is fun to play Legos. Instead make him sit on daughters bed. He will not enjoy sitting on the purple bedspread.
Resist the temptation to run out to the mailbox at 9:00 on Friday morning. Just because People comes on Friday here (I had to wait until Monday to get it in Utah) does not mean that the mail will arrive before 2:00pm. I wonder if the mailman could make this his first stop on Fridays?
Try not to laugh when, during your primary class, you ask what the kids have had to sacrifice for being a church member and 9 year old girl responds (very seriously) that she tore a piece of paper in half. Huh? I was thinking maybe you couldn’t play in a sports game or go to a birthday party or something.
Instructions from my life the last couple of weeks

INSTRUCTIONS FROM MY LIFE:
Don’t start painting boys room the day before Super-Saturday. You wont get to it again until at least three days later. (Before and After photos to come.)
Listen to dear husband when he tells you not to push to hard when you are priming. Otherwise, you will have to do two coats.
Don’t tell 6-year-old son that he can pick the color for his new room unless you are going to be okay with the bright green that he chooses.
When you try to convince your 2-year-old that he is a ‘big boy’ and should start to use the potty, don’t be surprised when he yells “I A BABY!” and runs the other way.
Convincing said 2-year-old that he is a boy when is insists he is a “g-earl!” will make you laugh.
When the spirit is telling you over and over again to pick up the Book of Mormon and read, you will be pleasantly surprised by what you find. His love will surround you, and you will feel peace.
Do that second coat of paint, even if you don’t want to.
Don’t believe that the scotch painters tape comes off as easily in real life as it does on tv.
Just because you gave 4-year-old daughter an empty backpack does not mean that she wont take a chain out of it and swing it around at school.
Target does not have shoes in said 4-year-old’s size. What is up with that?
Finding a book on your porch with a sticker from the library on it but no bar code or call number will drive you crazy for days. Who left it? Why? Where did it come from?
Do not buy 2 giant sized Symphony bars just because they were buy 1 get 1 free. You will regret it.
When you go to the store to buy DH some Diet Pepsi, and see that the price for a 12-pack is $5.69 + deposit and the price for a 2 liter is $2.29 you will be glad that you have kicked the caffeine and carbonation habit.
Just because you work out 4 times does not mean that you will lose weight. It doesn’t mean give up, however.
Going to play games with a bunch of couples you don’t know will turn out to be the highlight of your week.
Agreeing to make 5 baby blankets for area humanitarian effort should not be done. You will inevitably sew it wrong, and when you turn it right side out the batting will be on the outside and you will have to unpick the whole thing. Luckily you will eventually figure it out and the other four wont be so hard. You will, however, wish that you didn’t have to give the one with the cute Eskimos on it back. It is too cute.
When you read that Utah county got snow today you will insanely jealous that you weren’t there.
The movie Last Holiday will make you smile every time you watch it.
Girls Weekend
My sisters, my mom and I spent the weekend in St. George for a Girl’s Weekend. We went last year to see South Pacific at Tuacahn and LOVED it. It was amazing. They made an ocean on the stage with waves and water and everything. It was so cool. So, this year, we decided to stay for two plays and stay an extra day. We went down on Friday and saw Cinderella. It was pretty good. It was the Rodgers and Hammerstein version which I had never seen. It is hard to compete with the ocean on the stage from last year. They did have the fairy Godmother fly and the costume change that Cinderella made was amazing. I thought that it was cheesy though when the prince and Cinderella floated above the other dancers at the ball.
Saturday we got up and went shopping at the outlets. I LOVE the Children’s Place outlet there. It always has good deals. I got T and N shirt for $2, a pair of shorts for T for $3 and two pairs of jeans for N for $6 each. Very cool. I picked me up a couple of skirts at Dressbarn and some new sun glasses at Old Navy.
After lunch we went to see Hairspray! It was FABULOUS! The best part of our weekend, for sure. The theater was doing drawings. They had dolls, the soundtrack, bags, and of course Hairspray. My sister won some hairspray. The movie was great! I didn’t really know what it was about but I wanted to see it from the ads. It was fun, the music and acting was great and it was clever. See it. And soon.
We went to see My Fair Lady at Tuacahn Saturday night. It was LONG. It started at 8:30 and was about 11:45 when it was over. And they left out a scene. It was in the program. Scene 10. The ball. They left it out! I had never seen My Fair Lady before so I was so confused. It was fun to go (other than the heat) and we had great seats (row 2) but I wasn’t impressed with the play. The actors had great singing voices and everyone knew their parts but it didn’t make sense for someone who hadn’t seen it and it was weird. And, the one actor that played the main part (Higgins, maybe?) came out after the intermission with his shirt unbuttoned. My mom didn’t notice but it drove me nuts because you could tell he hadn’t meant to do that. Oh, well. Next year they have Les Mis and Oliver and Big River. I would love to go down for Big River.
Bridge to Terabithia
I took T to see this movie on Saturday. It is playing at the $1 theater here. It was sooo good. I have never read the book, but I think that I will add it to my list. It is about a boy that is tired of being bullied, and a new girl at school that doesn’t really fit it in. They are neighbors and go out to the woods and make believe that it is an enchanted wood. I worried that it would be a little scary for N so I didn’t take her but she probably would have liked it too. It would have been over her head though. T didn’t understand all of it until we talked about it on the way home and then it made more sense to him. I recommend taking your kids to see this (or rent it since it is out on video now) if they are 5-6 and up.
Over the weekend we also watched Foot Loose! I bought it while we were in Portland because it was in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart. I haven’t seen it forever and the last time I saw it was on tv. It is such a fun movie but I never realized how much cussing there was! If you don’t know, it is about a teenager that moves to a small down where dancing is outlawed, so he decides to get the law changed. Great music, fun dancing! What more can I say?
Early, Long Lunch
My DH said yesterday that he could take an early, long lunch today if I would get a baby-sitter. Called my favorite sitter (she cleans! she plays! love it!) and we went to see a movie. In the middle of the day, in the middle of the week! It was SOOO nice!
We saw Ocean’s 13. I LOVE the whole collection of Ocean movies. It was so good. It was laugh-out loud funny at certain points, and very clever. I hope to see it again, so that I can catch all the little things that are happening. I love that they have been able to keep the whole cast for all three movies. I was glad that Julia Roberts wasn’t in this movie…I didn’t love her role from the last one.
There were a few previews for movies that I would like to see. One about Vietnam and a new one with Catherine Zeta-Jones. Hopefully it wont be so long until our next movie trip! If you have a chance, see Ocean’s 13!
