A Soldier’s Poem
My cousin shared this on our family website. She is a Daughter of the American Revolution member and got it from someone at a meeting she was at. It is beautiful, so I thought that I would share.
A Soldier’s Poem
The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.
The sound wasn’t loud, and it wasn’t too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear
Perhaps just a cough, I didn’t quite know,
Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.
“What are you doing?” I asked without fear,
“Come in this moment, it’s freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!”
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..
To the window that danced with a warm fire’s light
Then he sighed and he said “Its really all right, I’m out here by choice.
I’m here every night. So that your family can sleep without fright.
It’s my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I’m proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at ‘Pearl on a day in December,”
Then he sighed, “That’s a Christmas ‘Gram always remembers”
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ‘Nam’,
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
I’ve not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he’s sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue… an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall.”
“So go back inside,” he said, “harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I’ll be all right.”
“But isn’t there something I can do, at the least,
“Give you money,” I asked, “or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you’ve done,
For being away from your wife and your son.”
Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
“Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we’re gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us.”
I need to say thankyou to those soldiers (and thier families) that stand watch for me. I am so grateful. Thank you.
Thanksgiving
Today we are with family in Utah, and we are having such a good time. I can’t imagine heading home and going back to the daily grind. I haven’t really had a chance to sit down and think about what I am thankful for until now, so here is my top five:
1. Hairspray on DVD. This movie just makes me happy.
2. Health – myself, my husband and my kids.
3. Family – I had no idea how much I would miss my parents and siblings when we moved…and I have three great kids and the best husband ever.
4. Mashed potatoes and my mom’s rolls. Really, need I say more?
5. Quiet. I just put A in bed, and he has entered a screaming/yelling phase and I might go crazy before it ends.
I hope that everyone had a fabulous Thanksgiving day with family and friends. What are you thankful for today?
Grateful Day
Sometimes we need to stop and think about what we are thankful for. Here is my list for today:
Awesome nursery teachers that have taught A “The Wheels on the bus.” I love listening to him sing about the wheels that go “wound and wound” all through “da town”.
Those rare times when T and N will play nicely together. This doesn’t happen so often these days, wish I knew why.
My H&GP Pumpkin Spice candle. It smells just like fall.
The General RS Meeting. It was so good. I think that Sister Thompson was talking just to me. Such a spiritual uplift too.
For fall. All the leaves here are amazing shades of yellow and red and it is beautiful. We didn’t get leaves like this in Utah.
For my siblings are with me in my goal to getting healthier. Down .5 lb. It isn’t much but I have stepped up my work-outs and cut back on my snacking. It is progress.
The hard work that DH is willing to do for us. He is working so hard to get this new business going and I am proud of him.
That my mom calls me 3-4 times a week (I call her that often too!) so we can chat. I really miss her.
So, what are you thankful for today?
Highlights
We arrived to Oregon on Thursday of last week. Here is my highlight list from the last week and a half:
*Seeing how excited my kids were when they saw their new rooms
*Having lots of help to get the truck unloaded
*Seeing my brother, sister and nephew
*Tillamook cheese-at a reasonable price!
*Being near a lot of parks! We met my cousin and her daughter at Washington Park in Beaverton on Tuesday. Just beautiful!
*A squirrel for a backyard friend
*Meeting the girl next door and having her offer to baby sit!
*Getting tv, internet and phone service today! Far too long without my blogs. Who knew you could get addicted so fast?
*the Weather. Do you know that we haven’t had to have our AC on at all? Just open the windows. Smell the fresh cut grass. Hear the birds. Smell the breeze.
So far we are enjoying our new house, although I am seriously homesick! I miss my mom the most. She has been my best friend for a long time now! Glad we’re here, and that the kids cooperated on the drive here. We made it and we still love eachother! =)
Pleasant Day
A couple of neighbors had agreed to do a yard sale with me today but they called yesterday and had changed their minds. I went back and forth on whether or not we should do one and finally decided that we should in fact, get our stuff ready and do one. I didn’t have an add in the paper so I just parked our car with a sign (actually, I had my DH do this!) on yard-sale row in our town. Every Saturday the block around the city center is filled with cars with signs advertising yard sales.
I got up this morning at 6:00 and started getting everything out. We were going to start at 7:00 and got three early birds. It was so hot today, I thought that I was going to die, but when we closed down at noon we had done pretty well. We loaded up the rest of the stuff and hauled it away. This afternoon, T and I went to the toy store to exchange A’s birthday gift. It was good for us to spend a little time together.
After A woke up, we got the kids in their swimming suits and blew up the new kiddie pool and got our the slip n slide. They played for about an hour while DH played the guitar on the porch and I laid in the shade and read my book. After awhile DH went to pick up pizza for dinner. We capped all of this off with baths and stories.
Feeling grateful today for this phase in my life. Loving being a mom.
I tried really hard to not think about the packing/cleaning that needed to be done. =) What did you do today?
Report
Just got home from Vegas this evening. It was hot there! Probably around 105-110, but we didn’t melt because my sister has a POOL! Well, her condo group does. We went every day and spent a few hours. The kids loved it! I enjoyed it too, but it would have been funner if a certain 2 year old would have stopped trying to jump off the edge. We went to Wal-Mart (what vacation doesn’t have a trip to Wal-Mart?) and to McDonald’s for lunch and play on the equipment but other than that we let the kids play and relaxed. This morning we did go to a park with sprinklers that was really fun.
We have a busy couple of days ahead of us. I am closing my salon on Friday so I am working hard tomorrow and Friday with some of my beloved clients. I am sad about it, but eager to get going on a new chapter in our lives.
Happy news: I got a new vacuum today! I ordered the Eureka THE BOSS Smartvac from AllergyBeGone.com and I LOVE it. I was a little bugged that I had to put it together (sort of) but it worked soooo good. My floor is clean again!
Highlights from the last week: *My baby turned 2 *I got a new vacuum *We got to St. George (4 hours away) before we had to stop on our trip to Vegas *Sun tanned legs
You say it’s your birthday…
…Well, it’s my birthday too!
Can’t believe that I am 28 today! I tried to sleep in but my three little munchkins wouldn’t let me. They all wanted to sit and look out my window, since we moved the bed under the window and they can watch the construction and the trains. They started fighting over who got to sit where so I got up and got breakfast going.
After that I had my last presidency meeting with my presidency. I will be being released from my four years in young womens sometime in the next couple weeks. I am sad and relieved, but mostly sad. I have been in YW for as long as some of the YW. I will miss them, they are amazing.
Then the apprasiser came (the appraiser of the people who are buying the house). After that my dear sweet friend, J, invited me over for lunch. She got kids meals from Wendy’s and we ordered Chinese Food for lunch. It was so good. We played Dance, Dance Revolution and did the bowling on the Wii. I am not much for video games but those were a lot of fun!
Tonight we are headed to dinner in SLC because my FIL is nominated for Entreprenuer of the Year for Utah. It is a fancy dinner and it should be fun. Any night out of the house is a good night, right?
Since I am 28, here are 28 things I am grateful for right now: 1. Curious George 2. Naptime 3. Diet Pepsi 4. Flat Irons 5. Cool weather so we don’t have to have the AC on 6. Family 7. The new scrapbook supplies my friend gave me 8. Sweats 9. Library Books 10. Neighbors 11. Moisturizer 12. Dishwashers 13. Great ladies to serve in the church with 14. Blogs 15. Our great realtor that is sending me listings over the web 16. Kix cereal 17. my Bunko group 18. A new Adventure 19. That our house sold without having to list it 20. Cell Phone 21. Flip Flops 22. Tweezers 23. Detangler spray for N’s hair 24. Baby sitters 25. Indoor plumbing 26. My pink and white fleece blanket 27. Summer 28. My dear, sweet husband
This day…
…started out with kids screaming and fighting. After I got them fed and dressed we headed to Sam’s Club. I found everything that I needed, checked out and got my kids back in the car. Then I stopped by T’s friend’s house to take him with us to the library. We got to the library and I couldn’t find my wallet. I called Sam’s Club (I had my purse and phone but no wallet. Not sure how that happened, because I swear I put my wallet back in my purse) but it wasn’t there. I panicked. We were able to stay at the library because I had T’s library card in my pocket. We went in and I told the kids that they could each choose five books. I found a couple for myself (Billie Letts and Beverly Lewis) and tried to help T find the construction books. N wanted Princess books and started taking books out of this other girls basket. A cried most of the way through the library so I was so stressed out!
After we were done at the library, we took T’s friend home and his sweet mother offered to keep T and N at her house while I went wallet-hunting. She even gave A some cookies so he wouldn’t cry at being left behind. I went to Sam’s and lo and behold, my wallet was there. I just need to send a huge THANK YOU out to whoever picked it up and turned it in! My money and cards and everything were still in it. I was so relieved! I stopped on my way back to get a drink and my friend, K, was walking all the kids down-town for ice cream so A and I met them there and enjoyed an ice cream cone with good friends.
The day started out crummy, but it is turning out so much better! Here is a list of what I am thankful for right now:
*Strangers that are good and kind-hearted *Cookies and Cream ice-cream *Dt. Coke *Kids that are excited about library books *Beautiful weather
Today I learned…
*I can get up before 7:00 and survive.
*A thinks that he loves granola bars. He is constantly begging me to “Open, open!” but I find chucks of “canola” bar all around the house.
*Just because the pre-k graduation is supposed to start at 10:30 does not mean that anyone besides me will be there. Not even the pre-k teacher.
*Getting to the Kindergarten graduation 30 minutes late, due to being at the pre-k graduation (that started 10 minutes late) will result in missing ALL of the songs. I sat down just in time to have the lights go off and watch the slide show. So cute.
*75 Kindergarten students in blue caps and gowns is just about the cutest thing I have ever seen. They even had the kids “walk”. They stood on a platform and waved. They must have practiced a TON because all the kids waved just right.
*Wendy’s now has onion rings. I don’t like onions, UNLESS they are fried. MMMmmm.
*I really should clean my baseboards regularly. Not cleaning them in 5 years and then trying to get them all clean by 6:00 (along with everything else) is not fun. I could not have survived if my mother-in-law hadn’t helped me for a couple of hours.
*Having a play-date when I am stressed out about getting the house ready to show is not wise. Especially when it is with a boy that is hyper and loud. And doesn’t listen.
*I have the best neighbors. My sweet neighbot across the street loaned me her vaccuum because mine suddenly pooped out.
*When the people coming to see the house say they will be here at 6:00 and don’t arrive within a few minutes serious stress will result.
*Reading with my kids is my favorite thing to do. I love how all three of them listen and watch with awe.
*House Hunters on HGTV just might be my favorite TV show. AND, they have had a new one EVERY night this week. How great is that?
Mother’s Day
Just enjoyed a great Mother’s Day. I was worried that we would all be so tired because it was such a busy weekend (Friday was the anniversary party, and Saturday was a ward Fun Run and my neice’s baptism and bbq), but we all had a good time and the kids didn’t melt down at all today!
I even got to sleep in.
Until 8:30.
Wow.
Bryan made me pancakes for breakfast and T gave me the gift that he made at school (a great little notepad that he decorated) and N gave me the picture she colored of me. Love it. I am a head with arms and legs and a TON of purple hair. And I am smiling in the picture. So glad she sees me as someone who is smiling! Bryan got me a Cuttlebug by Provo Craft. It is a die cut and embossing machine. Looking forward to making some incredible scrapbook pages with it!
After breakfast, we spent some time cleaning the kids rooms and getting everyone ready for church. From church, we went straight to my mother-in-law’s house and had dinner with Bryan’s grandparents, sister and brother and their families and his mom. It was a beautiful day and the kids all had a great time.
We came home, put the kids to bed and watched the Jazz beat the Golden State Warriors. Enjoyed the day and counting my blessings. Now as it is nearing midnight, I am just wishing that I could go to sleep!
